yup, when I was a child we lived in Tarrytown NY, mom and dad used to take us to this place (Name was the Highland Diner)

I came across this page today because that name just popped into my head. I used google to search and found it here :)

This used to be our big deal to go out to on Friday night with the family. If I remember right, they used to have a "Kids eat free" deal on the kids menu.. and when I was done eating my sister and I would play outside while mom and dad had coffee. Its amazing to see that picture, looks just like it did back then.

Good memories from those days :)

Liz,

We went to The Valley Restaurant in Garrison for the last night of Restaurant Week on Friday. They did everything the way it should have been done to entice someone to return to their restaurant. The menu selections were superb, the food delicious, the service impeccable. Unfortunately, they were closing for the season last weekend but you can be sure we will be returning to this beautiful restaurant when it reopens in the Spring. What a treat!!!

The Highland Diner has been around for decades.. eaten there for basic diner food, but never the lobster! As for the Cabin, my parents took me there for my first dinner out -- in 1959 and recently, I had started to stop by for lunch. My mother said the interior hadn't changed a bit! It was so authetic -- in terms of place and timlessness -- that it was actually cool! Food wasn't bad.. good burgers and basics.

I've always loved the look of that place, as well. The sign just has that retro-cool feel to it.

I've passed it many times on my way to shop at "The Art Barn":http://artbarnonline.com, a great place for art, frames (and custom framing), home accessories and fantastic jewelry that's just north of the restaurant.

I'll likely work with The Art Barn again, when I feature some hot holiday gifts on my blog, "Just Browing":http://justbrowsing.lohudblogs.com starting next month.

Whats classic? Everything. Traditional Italian food with a thin crust pizza that is excellent, red and white checked tablecloths, family ownership for 60 years, big old wooden bar, no neon sign and I think every member of the family works there.

It is in a transitional area in Mt. Vernon and there is no parking besides the street. It is well worth the effort. You will feel like you are in the 1950's...60's at the latest!

I have lived 1/4 mile from this place, I belive the "official" name is The Highland Diner, for 7 years. I have been ther twice. The diner it Croton, also a classic, gets most of the area's traffic.

For a REAL classic, try The Lincoln Lounge in Mt. Vernon!
