Dilemma Update
OK. I hope you guys don’t think I’m a snob, but I really don’t want to get a CostCo or BJ’s cake. I know, I know: They’re supposedly great. But I just don’t want to take a chance on something I’ve never tasted and serve it to 30 people who have come to expect great food at my parties. So here’s what I’ve done. I ordered a small personal birthday cake for our friend Laurie from The Runcible Spoon in Nyack. I’ve had their desserts before and quite like them.
So now it’s down to two choices. Yule Log or cookies. Let me explain.
I didn’t make it clear yesterday that the baby shower I’m throwing for my sister is actually a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres party from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday night. We knew it was right smack dab in the middle of one of the busiest weekends of the year, so we really didn’t want to have a traditional brunch on the last shopping day before Christmas. We figured people likely had plans on Saturday night, so why not throw a pre-party? That way, they can double book the evening, starting out at our house for drinks and snacks.
So, with that in mind: Do I really even need a cake? People are likely going off to other parties or out to dinner when they leave my mom’s house. They don’t really need a big dessert…. Why not just serve them a little something sweet to get them on their way?
The floor is open.

No CAKE? Ok, I know I’m a little obsessive about all things from the oven—particularly cake— but I just think you need to have some sort of cake. I’m not buying the bit about serving “a little something sweet”—for photo purposes, and just for the celebration, in general. But as you and many others know, I’m a cake freak.
Nevertheless, sigh, since you haven’t ordered a cake by now, you’ll probably have to settle for cookies or other snacks. You’re lucky your guests already love you!

I think Gayle secretly wants you to ask her to bake a cake for the shower!
I disagree that a shower cake is necessary. A cake might be warranted for a traditional shower (i.e. bunch of ladies opening presents, playing games on a Saturday afternoon). For an untraditional shower, anything goes. I had an untraditional shower and would have been thrilled with any sweet delicious dessert offered. In any case, you wouldn’t want to serve a cake that you have never tried. I bet it will be a wonderful party. Good Luck.
The Yule Log from Gatteau Swiss (sp?) in Orangeburg is amazing. What a great twist on a shower tradition.
If you have money to spend, Lulu’s in Scarsdale is the place to spend it. Evereything from cakes to cookies to rugelach are amazing (Lots of holiday baked goods as well). They also have a signature dessert which is supposed to be famous but I can’t quite remember the name of it. Anyway, you won’t find anything fresher, better tasting or more expensive then Lulu’s.
Snob. Specially for going to the runcible spoon. Carousel Cakes does better in my opinion. plus you had cheesecake you could have gotten. Runcible? BAH. I understand the whole Costco thing. But there are so few real bakeries around. Rockland bakery is so so. But they are around, I just like to stay away from Nyack cause they are all FooFoo and so yuppie and preppie and bursting with love.. (yes an oddcouple reference) If no cake then bring pastries or cookies… or Pie.. everyone loves pie. how could you not like ? ;-]
Good luck..
