Wine Discovery Series: Wine Dinners Featuring Great Wines From Lesser Known Regions

Wine regions like Bordeaux, Barolo, and Rioja may have name recognition, but they don’t hold a monopoly on producing world class wine.  Today, great wines can also be found in places few of us have ever heard of.  That’s why Meritage Restaurant in Scarsdale and Wine Educator David Baer have decided to present a series of Wine Discovery Dinners, featuring regional menus prepared by Chef Chris Vergara and paired with great wines from lesser known regions.  Each of the three dinners in the series will introduce diners to wines of Spain, France and Italy.

The price for each evening is $75.00 per person (inclusive of tax and gratuity). Those who wish to participate in all three evenings can take advantage of a discounted rate of $200.00 per person.

Discover great unheralded wine regions of France on April 3, Italy on May 9 and Spain on June 5.
Meritage Restaurant is located at 1505 Weaver Street Scarsdale NY 10583.  You can reserve a place at any of these dinners by calling 914-472-8484.

My wife and I had dinner at Meritage on Sunday (3/11) and I’m sorry to say we were terribly disappointed. Right off the top we were told there were no chicken dishes available (a limited menu became even more so).

For appetizers we had the “Crispy Duck Confit” (anything but crispy) and “Roasted Beets” (simply nothing special).

Main Courses were Scallops (undercooked and expensive – 4 for $30 – YIKES!!) and Wild Sea Bass which was average at best.

We were told the cheesecake was not available so for dessert we ordered the Apple Tart w/Cinnamon Ice Cream.

    Bad Choice.

The apple tart looked and tasted like it was cut from a supermarket brand box and the ice cream was vanilla.

The table of four to our right seemed to have issues as well. Two of their main courses were returned TWICE because they arrived cold (according to the quests the “plates” returned warm the first time but the foof was still cool).

P.S. to Meritage: If your going to have a selected menu – you better make sure it works.

    Even on Sunday.

I have been to Meritage on several occasions and have considered it as one of my favorites, the food is always on point and the staff and owners always treat me and my guest with great hospitality. Being a huge wine lover I enjoy their wine by the glass program, which I feel, is one of the best in Westchester County.

I am puzzled by the response of R.K. above, between friends, guest and myself we have always had a tremendous time at Meritage

There’s nothing I enjoy more than a wonderful evening of fine dining with my wife.

Perhaps we were terribly unlucky that night but the fact remains we had a bad experience at Meritage.

  4. Chris Vergara says:

    Dear Randy Koller,

This is an absolutely inappropriate outlet for a complaint about an experience you had at our restaurant. Not even the worst of restaurant critics condemn a restaurant after one visit.

We are a family run establishment that tries our hardest every day to please our customers. I have been in the business since I was 13 yrs. old and have lived by the credo that the customer is always right, and I am open to criticism but you have crossed the line my friend.

What you don’t see is the time and effort that goes into putting together events like the one that is being promoted here. I would like to thank you on behalf of myself and all the hardworking people who count on my restaurant to support themselves and their families, for the unquantifiable damage you have done.

Your “review” read as if my fiancee and I were standing in the back of the restaurant wringing our hands menacingly and trying to come up with a way to make your night miserable.

In the future, if you are having a sub-par experience in a restaurant, do not be afraid to say something. Once you leave there is nothing that can be done to rectify the situation (which is what Jamie or myself would have done had you made your displeasure known).

    Dear “RK”,

You must just have been “terribly unlucky” that night you ate at Meritage in Scarsdale. Either that, or you are just extremely difficult to please. I used to live in Scarsdale and have eaten at this fine establishment countless times. Never have I been displeased with the food—au contraire, I’ve always found it to be of the highest caliber. The talented young chef and his charming fiancee always do their best to make my experience enjoyable, and they have consistently succeeded. Even now that I live in Manhattan I still travel up to Meritage a couple of times a month. Truth be told, it’s always worth the journey!

    Dear Chris

My wife and I did not enjoy your restaurant that night.

I’m sorry but I’m just being honest.

    Regards,

    Randy
