This just in from “Wildman” Steve Brill:

Hunt for Chanterelle Mushrooms at Sugar Pond
with naturalist/author “Wildman” Steve Brill

On Saturday, July 14, naturalist/author “Wildman” Steve Brill will lead one of his world-famous Wild Food and Ecology Tours of Sugar Pond in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. This scenic pond side and woodland park contains lush habitats with enough variety to provide surprise after surprise as we explore the thickets and trails.

Common edible “weeds” such as Asiatic dayflower, mullein, chickweed, wood sorrel, sheep sorrel, Asiatic dayflower, lamb’s-quarters, and purslane are abundant, as are trees and shrubs such as sassafras, spicebush, and black birch.

The berry season is in full swing, so we’ll be on the lookout for luscious wineberries, tart sumac, and bittersweet black cherries.

With enough rain beforehand, choice edible mushrooms such as chanterelles, chicken mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, parasol mushrooms, black trumpets, russulas, and boletes (as well as deadly amanitas) may be coming up in the woods. The medicinal tonic, the reishi mushroom, should also be around.

The 90-minute tour begins at 9:30 AM, Saturday, July 14, at the Hillside Elementary School, 120 Lefurgy Ave., in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.

The suggested donation is $12 for adults, $6 for children under 12. (Bring exact change). Nobody is ever turned away due to lack of funds. To attend, call (914) 835-2153 at least 24 hours beforehand and reserve a place. For the 2007 tour calendar and additional info, visit http://www.wildmanstevebrill.com,
