Behind the Scenes at What’s Cooking

For a story about cold drinks to refresh you in summer, my friend and colleague Mark Vergari went on a photo shoot yesterday at Temptation Tea House in Mount Kisco. But, as we’ve seen with blogs and television and everything else, photo shoots are not just photography anymore, and reporting is not just scribbling in a notepad.

That’s Mark above shooting photography:

And here’s him making the same shot, with video:

The same thing goes for me. Though I’m not writing the story — JN freelancers Deven and Jill Black and Judith Hausman have already done that — I’m editing it, and I’m writing the What’s Cooking segment for RNN, and appeared in front of the camera for this shoot. Plus I’m writing this blog.

Here’s manager Nick Nie, whom I interviewed for the story.

He told me about all the popular drinks at Temptation Tea House, and then demonstrated how to make bubble tea. You basically add a flavoring to sugar, nondairy creamer, coconut powder and tea, shake with ice and add tapioca pearls, which are about the size of marbles. It’s an interesting sensation to have them float up your straw while you’re drinking. It’s like having a sip and a snack at the same time. See the tapioca at the bottom of the glass?

Here’s a look at the restaurant, as they’re changing from lunch to a more formal dinner service:

As we were packing up, Diana Pillsbury (left) and Paige Wolff came in for some peach sorbet and a bubble tea:

The sorbet looks delicious.

Look for the cold drinks stories next week: Wednesday in the Journal News and Thursday on RNN’s What’s Cooking. Of course I’ll post the video here after it airs.

Have you ever been to Temptation Tea House? Tried bubble tea?

  1. I simply adore bubble tea. I’m a fan of the fruity flavors, like honeydew and mango. It’s a great, fun drink and very refreshing during the summer. I love the bubble tea made at the Bubble Shop on Central Avenue – in the strip mall that also contains the Asian market and Mrs. Green’s – in Greenburgh.

The girls at that table were having mango, Gayle. Yes, I know about the Bubble Shop…. great place.

I love bubble tea! Temptation’s is good, but the Bubble Shop mentioned here does it the best (at least that I’ve had). LOTS of bubbles! And many different flavors to choose from, and sometimes they have them made with fresh fruit, like Mango (I always theorize that it’s because the market next door has too many ripe ones so the shop takes them for bubble tea). Oh, the bubble tea smoothies are great, too. They have interesting pastries there too. I like the bun made out of rice flower stuffed with red bean paste. Very reasonable prices, too.

Strangely, the worst bubble tea I’ve had in Westchester was at Aberdeen. Not nearly enough bubbles and not very interesting varieties.

There is a food stand at the Palisades Center that has bubble tea, it’s next to the Disney Store near the food court. It’s the place that makes that popped rice cakes. Their bubble tea is OK but my daughter really likes the rice cakes.

Yes, Bill, Delimanjoo is the place you’re talking about. We included it in today’s story on summer drinks to cool down with. Here’s a link: http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070718/LIFESTYLE01/707180302

Thats funny that it was in the article. I was going to say that you should do a story about them but took it out because I figured it was just a little food stand. But you didn’t mention the popped corn (or is it rice?) cakes.
