Farmers Market Loot, Aug. 2

This is the mother lode of all loot. There is no better time for local eating than August and September in the Hudson Valley.
Dines Farm: 2 whole chickens, 1 sweet Italian sausage, 1 chicken-parmesan sausage, 1 dozen eggs, 1 package bacon. (that’s right folks, it’s BLT season!): $45.
The Orchards of Concklin: 8 white peaches, 6 yellow peaches, 1 quart blueberries. $16.
The Baker’s Wife: 1 Balthazar baguette, 1 loaf cranberry-pecan, 1 loaf rye: $10.50.
R&G Produce: 15 ears of corn (we’re having company on Friday), 8 Kirby cucumbers, 4 red onions, 4 white onions, 1 bunch cilantro, 1 head iceberg lettuce (BLTs baby!): $17.50.
Panzarella: 2 large mozzarellas: $16.
Blooming Hill: 2 pints blackberries: $8.
Total: $105.
I’m definitely making a peach-blackberry galette. I’ve found a great new 1-pan dish to make for simple suppers, too. Inspired by the abundance of zucchini in my garden, I saute sausage and while it’s cooking I slice the zuchs. When the sausage is done, I just saute the zuchs in the schmaltz that’s left over. I toss the two together and add mint or basil. Hardly any dishes: we eat it in bowls.
What else should I make? If you’ve got a suggestion, you might want to enter it in the Locally Grown recipe contest. I went and checked out Valley’s kitchen in Garrison, where the cook-off is going to be in September, and let me tell you: it is gorgeous. It’s going to be like our own version of Top Chef or Iron Chef! Here’s the link for your entries.
