Journal News photographer Vinny DiSalvio is pretty proud of his wife, Dana, and for good reason. Her restaurant, the Sandbox Cafe on Long Beach Island, was named best restaurant in the readers choice awards for 2007-2008 in the Times Beacon Newspapers “The Island.” It also took top honors for best breakfast, best caterer and best waitress. Way to go!

  1. We just drove by there this last weekend! It looked crowded, which is why we moved on. If only I’d known, though, I would have pushed to wait for a table. D’oh.

    The Sandbox Cafe is a beautiful little outdoor cafe, I’m from Pennsylvania and have actually driven from my hometown in Levittown, Pa all the way to LBI, JUST to sit and have Dana’s famous “buttermilk pancakes, stuffed with blueberries and cream cheese” and other delightful breakfast foods. Her recipes are divine! THe staff is fabulous! IT’S WORTH THE WAIT PEOPLE!!
    Not only is the food fabulous and the staff friendly, the best part after is you can get your feet in the sand just up the block and walk it off. :) This folks is the difference between the small “Mom and Pop” cafe, and the bigger “corporate run” eateries. Creativity, Style and that “This is my breakfast spot” feeling is what you get in this little slice of heaven. Dana has really made a niche for herself down at LBI. Keep up the great work! I’ll be stopping there today as a matter of fact :)
