The Iron Tomato Opens In White Plains
A new gourmet shop has opened in White Plains. It’s a beautiful place with mostly Italian specialty ingredients, yet it’s a full-service grocery in other ways: there’s a fish counter, a butcher, a huge cheese selection, prepared foods, a pizza oven, and a gelati and pastry counter. It’s going to make a lot of people in White Plains very happy come lunch time.
I stopped in on my way out of town for the weekend so I didn’t take a lot home. But here’s a quick look around:
Prepared snacks and salads:
Part of the cheese selection. One case is French and Spanish, one case is American and one case is Italian:
Fish:
Meat:
Prepared hot foods:
A pizza on display:
Beautiful panini:
My margarita pizza. The crust was a little doughy and the toppings didn’t quite have the oomph that I’d like from the flavor department. But believe me, I’ll be trying a lot more prepared foods and buying cheeses and salads, too.

looks nice. thanks for the pics.
Visited Iron Tomato on Memorial Day. It was quite busy at lunch time. Sampled some fine prosciutto, mozzarella, Vermont blue cheese, etc. Bought several fine cheeses from Italy, USA, and Quebec. Prepared “Italian combo” sandwich was good along with grilled chicken breast and broccoli rabe. Definitely a major addition to the downtown White Plains foodie scene and what many of us that have moved into downtown White Plains’ upscale condo scene have long awaited. Congratulations to Iron Tomato!!
I wandered into the Iron Tomato on Thursday and fell in love – White Plains was desperate for a market like this – My kids sampled goats milk cheese coated with rosemary and loved it – The blood orange sorbet was better than Ciao Bella’s – The cappuccino gelato was smooth and tasted like good coffee – This is the first time I have seen cerignola olives in a jar – The shelves and cases were eye candy for a foodie – and everywhere I turned there was more to be seen –
Giant pasta, fresh fish, truffles – chocolate and the mushroom, fresh sandwiches, pizza, homemade ravioli – I cannot wait to try more –
Also, I had a cappuccino this morning ($2.25) – Fresh, strong and smooth and delightful – and the Italian packaged croissant for 89 cents was fresh and tasty – One of my sons decided he wants that for snack for school –
I am urging everyone I know to stop in and hope we can keep the Iron Tomato going strong so it does not meet the demise of Gourmet Garage
They also have some fresh produce. It all looked and smelled very good.
I, too, was impressed with the gelato. I had the peach melba flavor, which was delicious! There were two very attentive ladies at the counter with the gelato, sorbetto, chocolates and cakes; they were very nice and friendly. I am looking forward to trying The Iron Tomato’s coffee and the other gelato flavors.
We’ve recently started ordering from Iron Tomato for lunch and LOVE the food, however find the people taking the orders over the phone to be very rude and abrupt. We order our lunch out every day but don’t think we’ll be placing anymore lunch orders with them. The food is good, but not sure it’s worth being treated as though I’m annoying them by placing an order.
