Food Finds in the Lower Hudson Valley

L’Artista is Now Spampi’s Trattoria and Tavern

Posted by: Liz Johnson - Posted in Uncategorized on Dec 03, 2008

Spampi’s Trattoria and Tavern has taken over the spot in Orangeburg where L’Artista used to be. Owner Rob Spampinato is calling it both a trattoria and a tavern because he’s serving Italian cusine — including thin crust pizza (called pizzetta) — but he’s also doing live entertainment, from blues to jazz to rock and everything in between. Plus, he’ll be showing college and professional sports games on the new 50-inch HDTVs.

A quote from the e-mail he sent out:

Spampi’s has been in motion for over 30 years; in 1978 my father and uncle, Al and Ron, opened the first Spampi’s in Spring Valley NY. After five years of successful business with a clientel that included everyone from Paul Anka to the “Chairman of the Board” Frank Sinatra himself, they sold the restaurant to start families. Here we are 30 years later, with the help of my family’s recipes, we have brought Spampi’s back.

Aside from a new entrance way and autographed musical memorabilia added in the bar, we have kept the same comfortable intimate vibe that L’artista had. Our dining room is spacious and our wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable in all the dishes and wine we offer. Our bar is cozy and will offer all the major brands of beer as as well as a revolving selection of micro and seasonal brews. Our bartenders specialize in all of our original cocktails and can help you select the perfect wine, beer, or cocktail to suit your tastes or meal. Our chefs all have years of experience and will offer different dinner specials nightly. Even though we are primarily an Italian restaurant, our specials will frequently step outside the Italian realm and include Asian, American, and Latin American influences.

Spampi’s uses only the finest ingredients, imported pastas, san marzano tomatoes, home made mozzarella, imported cheeses and meats from the best places in Italy, and home made meatballs to ensure that your dining experience is authentic and enjoyable. Please feel free to stop in, if for nothing more than the take a look at our menu and meet us. We are now taking reservation for Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.

I went to the new L’Artista called Spampi’s. I thought the food was very good and that the waitress was extremely friendly. I loved the classic Italian menu. So much to choose from. I had the Gorganzola Gnocci for an appetizer and the baked ziti siciliana for an entree.I will definately be going back soon.

Went to Spampi’s over the weekend with the family. Liked what the menu had to offer but couldn’t understand why they didn’t have a kids menu. Wine by glass was limited and the wait staff needs to be better trained. We were constantly asking them not to take our plates away with half eaten food. Overall food was good but lack of kids menu means we won’t be back soon.
