A Wine Dinner Celebrating Mardi Gras, Er, Carnivale, at Via Vanti! in the Kisco

Posted by: Liz Johnson - Posted in Uncategorized on Feb 18, 2009

An email about the celebrations going on at Via Vanti! in Mount Kisco for Fat Tuesday. All the info, after the jump.

Known as La Serenissima (“The Most Serene Republic”), Venice is a magical city of
color, light, and mystery. It has inspired generations of artists, writers and musicians the world over. At its
height, it was the hub of international trade, a gateway to the Orient (Marco Polo was Venetian)
and the original home of Carnevale.
To coincide – more or less – with Martedi Grasso (Mardi Gras – Fat Tuesday), we have chosen Venice and
the Veneto as the inspiration of our next wine dinner. The Bellini, carpaccio, the ever popular tiramisu,
Soave, and the inimitable Amarone della Valpolicella all trace their origins to this region. While feasting
on these and other gustatory delights we will be serenaded by the music of Antonio Vivaldi who lived,
composed, taught and performed during much of his life while serving as a priest at the Chiesa della
Pieta facing the Grand Canal, and view captivating images on our flat-screen monitor that explore the
enchanting shadowy canals of Venice and the nearby lagoon islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello.
Discover Venice and the Veneto at Via Vanti!—a dazzling feast for all the senses.

Would like to report that Carnivale & Mardi Gras celebrations will take place in different forms at several other local spots. At Sardegna in Larchmont there are colorful ceremonial masks always on display along with some traditional Sardinian fare via Vittorio. At La Bocca in White Plains, Tony hangs the beautiful masks in his dining room. And at his other spot, Spiritoso’s in Yonkers, there will be an actual Carnivale menu and entertainment.
Of course, Mardi Gras New Orleans style will be ongoing at Mt. Vernon’s Bayou…

Just found out that Joe’s Quarry Inn, 174 Marbledale Road, Tuckhaoe, will also be serving Mardi Gras specialties like shrimp and Andouille gumbo, chicken and sausage Jamabalaya, pulled pork and fried shrimp Po’Boys…
