Thursday night we went live from restaurant 42 in White Plains, on the 42nd floor of the Ritz-Carlton hotel. I had two of my guest bloggers — Doug Yuan of HungryTravels.com and Dina Braun, Westchester foodie extraordinaire — on the show, and Chef Anthony Goncalves stopped by our table to talk. We also present a little insight into Anthony by taking you behind the scenes in his kitchen, and show some nice shots of the food and of the beautiful views from high about White Plains.

Liz, what a great idea. I’m watching your show right now and you are all exclaiming over the salt shaker. This is so much fun!
I’m going tomorrow and can’t wait.
Thanks Sharon! We’ll be doing it again from Restaurant X on Thursday, April 2. We had a blast!
Liz, we were there last night too. When Ritz Carlton was being built, I remarked to my guy, “Wouldn’t it be nice to someday go to the top of the Ritz & have a drink?” & he replied, “The only Ritz in my future is a Ritz Cracker.” Thanks to RW, I not only had a drink, but dinner too!
Sue, that is so sweet. I hope you liked your meal.
Actually, we were disappointed for several reasons – no choice of appetizer or dessert, entrees good not great, the time restrictions for RW reservations (5-6:30 & 9-9:30) and a 20% gratuity automatically added to the bill (I’ve seen that done for tables larger than 6, but we were a couple.) I find that presumptuous – shouldn’t a tip be left to the discretion of the patron based on service? Plus the weather interfered with the magnficent views we were so looking forward to. 42 just didn’t compare to the delightful experience we had earlier in the week at X20, where we had 5 choices for appetizers and desserts along with 4 entrees – excellent presentation & preparation plus a friendly & knowledgeable wait staff who received more than a 20% tip because they deserved it! We’ll be back there for sure.
Sorry to hear you were disappointed. But glad you had a great time at X20!
Sue, I am happy to see your 42 comments, since it makes me feel better about what I did. I actually had a reservation there for this past Tuesday, which I canceled because I was getting a bad feeling about going there due to the lack of choice of appetizer and dessert (not to mention the soup not even being listed on the online menu, and given that I have dietary restrictions I could have ended up not being able to eat it at all!). Not to mention the uninspired entree descriptions. I ate at X2O last night, and we had a FABULOUS meal. I need to write and post a review of that and our great meal at John Michaels earlier in the week.
I was pleased to have dinner at 42 last Thursday. They extended their restaurant week for a second week, however when we looked at the regular menu, the prices were fair for the lovely selection of dishes so we ordered from that. The sommelier was delightful and very charming and knowledgeable. The service was impeccable, only surpassed by the amazing food. Chef Goncalves was truly warm and hospitable and very attentive to his patrons as well as his gorgeous dishes. I will most definitely return and I encourage everyone with a discriminating palate to try 42.
