Fom a press release:

When you dig into a bucket of popcorn at the movies, you might recoil a bit at the thought of all that chemical “butter” that’s laced through it, but how about what goes into your genetically modified lunch? Rivertown Film answers that question when it presents the informative activist documentary “Food, Inc.”on Saturday, October 17th at the Nyack Center. The event is being sponsored by Nyack’s new specialty store, Old World Food Market. The beverage sponsor for the evening is Nyack’s Village Vintner.

The film, about the big business of feeding Americans all the junk that multinational corporate money can buy, exposes the underbelly that’s been hidden with the consent of the USDA and the FDA. Huge orporations control our nation’s food supply, often putting profit ahead of consumer health. “Food, Inc.” charts how and why the villains not only outnumber the heroes in contemporary food production, but also how and why they out bluff, outmuscle and outspend their opponents by billions of often government-subsidized dollars.

That’s a lot of food for thought. And because it is, Rivertown has put together a post-screening panel moderated by Lisa Kaess, Co-Chair of the “Hands2Mouth Garden Initiative”. Panelists include Rockland gardener Joan Gussow, the author of “This Organic Life”, fomer chair of Nutrition Education Program at Columbia University Teachers College, and a former member of the FDA Food Advisory Committee, John McDowell, President of the Rockland Farm Alliance, and Tamika Adjemian Hanchrow, the Master Gardener with the Cornell Cooperative Extension. A short film by Anthony Geathers, “Hands 2 Mouth: A Garden Grows”, will precede the panel discussion.

This Rivertown Film Community Event should give anyone who attends a lot to chew on.

The screening starts at 7:30pm. Tickets will be sold online and purchased through our website, rivertownfilm.org. or at the door. Prices are $9/General Admission, $7/Students, Seniors and General Members, and $6/Student and Senior Members. Buying tickets in advances insures a seat to this important event.

Rivertown Film was founded in 2001, and is a non-profit organization whose sponsors include Good Samaritan Hospital, St. Thomas Aquinas College, and Maria Luisa Boutique.
