Jury Duty Lunch No. 2: Blu Fig in New City

Posted by: Liz Johnson - Posted in review, Reviews on Oct 15, 2009

I tried to go to Blu Fig for dinner during August, but the wait was too long for a table. Last week, more than two months later, I still almost got turned away for lunch. I just got there in time to get the last available table. Blu Fig is one popular place.

And I can see why. Good food, fast service and reasonable prices.

The pizza was crispy and chewy, the tomato sauce was well balanced and the cheese was creamy. My one complaint: the restaurant is so loud you can barely hear your tablemates.

You ask for a table first, and then you get up and order at the counter.

It’s not my favorite way to dine, but I understand in this economy that restaurants have to make it work any way they can. And here’s the good news: They need fewer staff this way, and you’ll get a table faster. That’s definitely a plus for the customer if you’re there with small children.

And this restaurant is very family friendly.

After school, there are often teenagers in big groups, and the early shift for dinner always has kids.

On to the food. We shared the eggplant dish, called Imam Bayladi on the menu.

It’s eggplant, onions and feta. The feta is normally served on top but we asked for it on the side. The dish was flavorful and earthy. A nice way to start the meal.

My mom wanted a salad pizza. They don’t have that on the menu, so the young woman taking our order made a suggestion: order a pizza without cheese and a salad on the side.

So that’s exactly what we did. The salad:

And the cheese-less pizza:

It was kind of her to suggest that, instead of just saying “no, we don’t have it.” My mom really liked it. The lettuce wilted just ever so slightly, and the pizza sauce and crust were lovely.

I got the margherita. I really enjoyed it:

The food here is really very tasty.

But — if a loud restaurant bothers you, think twice. It was cacophonous, and this was at lunch, so people weren’t really drinking. I can’t imagine what it’s like for dinner with wine and beer involved.

For me, though, the pizza is worth it. I’ll be back, and I’m ready to try the other dishes: pastas, salads, entrees. They all look very appealing.

Check out my previous post with a little history about the restaurant and links to menu here.

As far as jury duty?

Jury duty pros:
The food is excellent.
The wait is short.
In the summer, you can eat outside.

Jury duty cons:
It’s super loud, so you can’t really clear your head from a stressful day in court.

Jury duty rating:
Two out of four gavels.
