Good morning! It’s Katherine Curry, guest-blogger. Liz is off this week so she asked me to post some local links in her absence.
The culinary highlights of my weekend were pretty low-key. Friday night we had dinner at Magic Wok in Pleasantville, where we ordered off the New Year’s menu. Nothing spectacular, just good, reliable Chinese food—and up here in Northern Westchester, that’s a hard thing to find. (Let me know in the comments box where you like to go for good Chinese.)
The best part of the meal was this appetizer plate with Szechuan cabbage, one sticky little sparerib, and a very good spicy tofu salad, which is at the top of this picture.

Saturday we made pita bread from Rose Levy Beranbaum’s The Bread Bible.

Shortly after we baked the bread, the inner glass on my oven door shattered! I have a twelve-year-old Thermador; I can’t believe this happened. So today I’ll be researching replacement parts online—and maybe new ovens.
On Sunday I made sticky rice with shrimp. Sauteed the shrimp shells and then made stock to cook the rice in—I used my rice cooker. Into the cooked rice I stirred sauteed shrimp, chopped scallions and bacon. I should have taken the time to finely chop the bacon—it would have looked prettier, I think.

Anyway, here’s what folks have been talking about this weekend. Let me know in the comments box if I missed something interesting that you saw.

Great Take-Out, Great Eat-In, Great Sushi Chef.
Not that I want everyone to rush there and then I will not be able to get a table…as I go at least once a week to Mt. Kisco Oiishi. It has been consistantly good for the past year. I am not a sushi eater but have witnessed some beautiful displays on other plates. Their other food is delicious and the service is superb. The appetizers are great, especially the spicy shrimp and veggie dumplings fried. The lunch special is a great value and well worth the trip. Don’t let the outside appearance next to Dunkin’ Donuts fool you, as inside is a modern decor. WCC is hosting a cooking demonstration there on 3/13. Go to http://www.sunywcc.edu/continuing_ed/courses/taste.htm to look at the offerings and sign up. The staff are very friendly and accomodating. I have even hosted an event there for the Neighbor & Newcomers Club and all were thrilled.
