Good morning and happy Monday. That was some storm over the weekend, wasn’t it? I know many of you are without power…. how awful. Somehow I escaped that, even though I saw transformers blow right next to my car and half of Nyack was without power.
I didn’t realize the extent of the storm when I headed out on Saturday night. My husband and I were crossing the bridge to meet some friends in Irvington, and the wind was blowing the car across the lanes, and rain was coming down in horizontal sheets. By the time we reached Route 9 in Tarrytown, we saw downed wires, downed trees and branches all over the road. When we realized the intersection of Route 9 and Main in Irvington was closed, we just turned around and headed home. As we crossed back into Rockland, we looked up at the mountain: it was completely black, save one spot of flashing red emergency lights and a stream of white headlights moving along Route 9W. Eerie.
We were planning on eating out Saturday, so we hadn’t been to the farmers market. We scrounged for some pork chops in the freezer and made a baked potato and a salad:
On Sunday morning, I met my parents for brunch at O’Donoghue’s in Nyack. It being the week of St. Patrick’s Day, I had the corned beef hash:
On Sunday afternoon, I got to making some beans I’d been soaking overnight. Of course they’re from Rancho Gordo. You had to ask? On the left, Rio Zape. On the right, Vaquero:
They were meant to inform in a chili con carne. Here’s adding the meat to the onion and garlic flavored with spices and mixed with beer and water:
But supper time came around, and my husband decided he’d rather have the steaks he’d bought on sale at Old World Market that afternoon:
So I put the chili away (it’ll only get better), and we had a meat-and-potatoes meal (again).
Strip steak, with mixed Rancho Gordo beans, arugula salad and roasted potatoes:
Quite satisfying, actually. And afterward, we watched Pacific. Did you all see it? Intense, right?
