The Pony Express Chili Dog
Howdy, everyone—Katherine Curry, back with a brief chili dog update.
It’s no secret that Pleasantville’s Pony Express, Iron Horse chef/owner Phil McGrath’s take on fast food, serves great hot dogs and burgers. This cute little shop overlooking the Pleasantville train station opened in 2006 and has garnered raves and a devoted following. The motto here is “naturally good fast food” and on the menu you’ll find only high-quality, fresh, preservative-free ingredients. Pony Express uses Dines Farm hot dogs, which are firm, meaty, top-of-the-line weiners.
I’ve certainly been to this spot many times, but last week, for the first time, I noticed that there’s a chili dog on the menu. I’m happy to report that, like everything else on the menu, Pony Express’s chili dogs are great.
The dense chili is filled with finely-ground beef and just enough chili heat to give your mouth a tingle. There are some peppers in there—you can see the green and red pieces. I’m pretty sure it’s tomato-free, but can’t be sure. That homemade roll is hefty but doesn’t overwhelm the dog. At $3.25, this big, filling dog is a delicious bargain, and the perfect quick meal for a summer day.
I usually do take-out, since there aren’t many seats inside or outside. Pony Express offers curbside service, which makes takeout even easier.
