Swagat Halal Indian Cuisine Opens in Tarrytown

Hi everyone, this is guest blogger Margaret Nafz, reporting on a couple new restaurants for Liz.  Here’s some information on a new Halal Indian restaurant on Route 9 in Tarrytown which has replaced Cafe Tandoor which used to be in the same spot:

Swagat Halal Indian Cuisine has been doing business on 148 East 46th St. in Manhattan since 1994 and in May they opened a sister location in Westchester, NY.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is very contemporary casual, the walls are simply adorned in light beige paint with a wall sized mirror and small dark wood bar in the lobby. The floors are a mix of red, patterned carpeting in the dining room and marbled tile throughout the rest. The right hand wall of the front dining room is glass as is the front, street facing wall which allows diners to people watch while they eat. The tables are closely spaced, with glass tops over white tablecloths.

The menu, which is very vegetarian friendly, offers a fairly large selection for both lunch and dinner. The appetizers include vegetable choices like Chana Chaat Papri (chickpeas and potatoes in yogurt and tamarind) along with meat dishes like Seekh Kabab (Tandoor cooked minced lamb or chicken) as well as a handful of soups and salads.

More, after the jump.

Among the usual entree’ suspects like Tandoori Chicken and Chicken Vindaloo are a variety of seafood dishes like Salmon Tikka-yogurt marinated and broiled in a Tandoor and Whole Fish Masala along with more unusual fare such as Curried Goat (having long since missed the curried goat I used to get in my old neighborhood in the Bronx I was very happy to see this offering!) . Owner Mohammed Nibibrahim says that the Chicken Tikka Masala is a house favorite and the most popular with diners.

Swagat is a Halal restaurant, so it does not have a bar and does not allow BYOB, but they do offer some specialty yogurt drinks like Dough (yogurt with club soda and mint) and Mango Lassi (yogurt and mango) along with regular soft drinks. The restaurant offers take-out and delivery and offers catering services for small and large parties.

The restaurant is located on Route 9 in Tarrytown, directly across from The School of Esthetics. There is metered parking on the street and a municipal lot a block away across from the flooring store.

The 411 is coming soon. Til then 19 North Broadway, Tarrytown, NY. 914-332-5544.
