Best Ice Cream in Eastchester and Scarsdale

Katherine Curry’s Journal News Ice Cream Odyssey took her on a delicious journey all around the Lower Hudson Valley this summer. Here are her picks for great ice cream in Eastchester and Scarsdale. Take it away, Katherine:

Pane e Gelato

This spacious stand-alone café, housed in a brick building on White Plains Road since late 2009, serves authentic Italian pastries, breads and excellent espresso, along with sorbet and gelato, made fresh throughout the week.

On hand are 24 flavors daily, and the selection is constantly changing. Owners Paolo and Lidia Polano, Eastchester residents, have created a café that brings a bit of Italy to Eastchester. Many ingredients of the bread, pastries, and gelato are flown in from Italy.

The gelato case is a treasure chest, packed with brilliantly-colored fruit sorbets, creamy and ornately-decorated gelato in flavors like espresso, pistachio and mint.

The last time I visited, I sampled coconut. My husband loved its intense flavor. Nutella gelato is creamy and rich, but chocolate is almost too light in texture for me, perhaps because of its lower butterfat content. (Gelato easily has half the butterfat of ice cream).

I guess I’m a fan of lots of butterfat when it comes to chocolate, but this is that rare chocolate that’s refreshing enough to devour on a hot summer day.

The best part of Pane e Gelato having an espresso bar and gelato? Customers can order an affogato, a delicious Italian dessert that’s a scoop of vanilla gelato topped with a shot of hot espresso. Sweet and bitter, cold and hot combine for a delicious treat.

Last Licks

Part ice cream parlor, part sports-memorabilia store, Last Licks serves brightly-colored, sweet ice cream (sometimes with a sports theme), custom-made for the stores. If you’ve got a super sweet tooth, try the S’Moreo, created by Scarsdale High School’s class of 2007 — it’s chocolate ice cream with cookies, marshmallows and graham crackers.

Metro Desserts

Flavors like mixed berry gelato and rich Sedutto chocolate ice cream deserve better storage treatment than they sometimes get at this cute little pastry shop next door to the bustling Metro Deli. But every cup of gelato comes with a deliciously crunchy little cone-shaped cookie.
