My Cooking Parties in Haverstraw

The kids who know Angela Rivera from her cooking classes at the Arts Alliance in Haverstraw know her as Chef Angela or Healthy Chef Lady. And it was those kids who inspired Rivera’s latest business venture — My Cooking Parties — in which she brings an hour-and-a-half cooking class to your home.

“The kids from my classes would always ask me to come to their houses to do their birthday parties,”?Rivera says. “After a while, it dawned on me. That’s a good idea.”

Rivera, a mother of three, still teaches at the Alliance three times a week, and she’s starting to build word-of-mouth about the parties, which can be suited to tastes, allergy and dietary restrictions.

“I just did a sushi party for 23 12-year-olds,” Rivera says. “It wasn’t raw fish: just vegetables and fruit. But the kids had a blast. We made dessert sushi with fruit roll-ups.”

Other parties include: Pastry Chef (Rivera brings a mini cake and teaches partygoers to decorate it); Crazy Cupcake Party (kids decorate four mini cupcakes); and Cookie creations (partygoers ice and decorate their own cookie).

“It’s all self-contained,” she says. “We don’t take over the house. We come in, hold the party and clean up.”

The parties are also a great way to keep kids busy during an event designed for their parents, Rivera says.

She’s one smart cookie.
