Maria Reina with her Chipotle Black Bean Burger!
The Small Bites Throwdown challenged two of our food bloggers, JL Fields and Maria Reina, to create recipes that showcased summer onions from Amawalk Farm in Katonah. Fields, who writes the “I Eat Plants” column, created the a Cucumber-Onion-Quinoa salad, and Reina, the “Seasonal Chef” blogger, came up with the burger. The plan was for people to taste samples of the food at the farmers market at John Jay Homestead in Katonah, normally one of the busiest in Westchester, and cast their votes on Small Bites.

A downpour at the farmers market cancelled the cooking demonstrations, but Fields (left in the photo with me in the middle) and Reina (right) still handed out samples of their food, and we still had people voting online. Reina took home the title of Throwdown winner with 62 percent of the vote. Congratulations!

Maria’s burger was fantastic! I had a blast participating and, regardless of the rain, loved passing out samples of quinoa salad for three hours!
ah … the day in the life of a demo chef … it was great fun having someone with me! Not to mention tasting your killer quinoa salad!
