The 76 House in Tappan: Hudson Valley Restaurant Week Fall 2012

Hudson Valley Restaurant week is something I look forward to every year. Last year and this year, I had the pleasure of sharing my experiences with you. I’m Michele Curran  and on Saturday, November 10, my girlfriends and I enjoyed a delicious meal at The 76 House in Tappan.
The Old ‘76 H ouse was built in 1668 and besides being used as a meeting place for the patriots during the American Revolution, it also served as a prison for Major John Andre, the notorious spy for the Brits! In the 200 years that have followed, it has hosted some of the great generals of the Continental Army including George Washington.
Having been to the restaurant before for a the Christening of my friends son, I was eager to come back and order off the menu. I had the famous pot roast previously, which is delicious, but sadly was not on the restaurant week menu. Since it was Saturday afternoon, there was a little confusion as to whether they were serving the pre-fixe menu, but it all got worked out.
We started with the Wild Boar Sausage served with sweet onions and white bean cassoulet, the Butternut Squash Ravioli with a sage and herb brown butter sauce, and the Montrachet Salad served with fried goat cheese, arugula, field greens, toasted almonds, dried cranberries, Bermuda onions and a white balsamic vinaigrette. All three items were excellent! I cleared the sausage from my plate in less than 2 minutes! The Butternut Squash Ravioli wasn’t too heavy and the salad was crisp and light, all excellent first courses.
Next up was our Main course. I had the Shepard’s Pie, sautéed beef and fresh vegetables with mashed potatoes and I can honestly say it was the BEST Shepard’s Pie I’ve ever had! I’m Irish, I’ve had A LOT of Shepard’s Pie in my lifetime and I wanted to bring 3 or 4 home with me. My friend had the Fish and Chips, lightly battered and served with french fries, malt vinegar, and homemade tartar sauce. She said the tartar sauce was beyond excellent and the fish was battered and fried just right! My other 2 friends had the Home-Roasted Turkey and French Brie with cranberry mayonnaise on flatbread. Both of them enjoyed it immensely. I took a bite and would have enjoyed a little more mayonnaise but overall very good.
After all that yumminess it was time for dessert!! My friend got a cappuccino, the cinnamon made a star on top of the foam (very cute); I had the Raspberry Tort and my other friend had the Chocolate Ganache Layer Cake. The chocolate cake was so good she devoured it before I could get a taste! I’ll have to go back for that and my tort was amazing. I loved it!
Overall the experience was great! I would definitely recommend going there. In fact we scheduled our next girls lunch for next month there! My cousin went to The 76 House for her anniversary and had nothing but wonderful things to say. I heard the alligator was delicious. The atmosphere there is very cozy and homey and has just the right amount of history inside to make you feel like you’ve entered a tavern from the 1700’s. Excellent time.
