Cosimo’s Brick Oven in Poughkeepsie: Hudson Valley Restaurant Week Fall 2012

Welcome back! It’s Theresa Narvesen [1] again with my second HVRW post. I’m switching gears a little bit here with my next restaurant, Cosimo’s Brick Oven in Poughkeepsie. This time, instead of being armed with my husband as my trusty sidekick, I took my parents with me for a nice Sunday lunch.

Cosimo’s is right off of route 9 in Poughkeepsie on Delafield Street. Keep your eyes open for their sign or you could miss the turn! While it can’t be seen too well from the road, the main building itself happens to be quite large and beautiful. The main entrance to the restaurant shows the gorgeous colors of the establishment, which are perfect for fall, and a huge winding staircase leading up to a private room.

We were seated in a small, well-lit side room by a cheerful hostess. The day was absolutely gorgeous, so the sun came streaming into the room.  We took a few minutes to look over the menu because everything sounded so amazing. It was really hard to decide! Can I get one of each? Just kidding. Every meal starts with bread and olive oil for dipping. If you’re a fan of Italian restaurants, you know exactly what I mean. Yum! The bread was seasoned with cheese and spices, and the olive oil was rich and fruity. I don’t think there’s any other way to eat Italian bread.  [2]

The appetizers we ordered were the garlic green beans over pesto aioli with toasted walnuts and cheese, and a Butternut squash soup with maple whipped cream and crispy sage. I have never tasted anything quite so delicious. The green beans were a vibrant color and still held their crunch nicely. The pesto was unlike anything I have ever had. What a combination of garlic and creamy pesto, and the crunch from the walnuts sent this dish over the edge. The Butternut squash soup was pure decadence. I’m serious. I don’t usually say phrases like this regarding my food, but I’m not lying. You could taste every single layer of flavor in this soup with each spoonful. You have the creaminess of the Butternut squash mixing with the maple flavor from the cream, and the richness throughout the soup was an intense buttery flavor. Nibble on one of those sage leaves and you have a dish you won’t soon forget. [3] [4]

Our main dishes were zucchini cut like pappardelle pasta and mixed with a creamy tomato sauce and garlic shrimp. The sauce had such a nice, spicy bite. If you’re not a fan of spicy, dredge the shrimp in the sauce and it cools it down a bit. Still amazing and very light. I ordered the flat bread with mozzarella and Fontina cheeses, country spinach, ham, Parmigiano, a quail egg on top, and it was drizzled with truffle oil. I have an obsession with truffle oil. It is one of my favorite flavors. It was perfect with this dish. Crunchy flat bread holds onto all those toppings, and a distinctly unique menu item is born. I don’t know how this was created, but I’d like to give the chef a hug. I couldn’t finish it all, but I made sure the rest came home with me. This next dish was not on the RW menu, but it is on their regular menu; pork pappardelle. A rich, thick pork sauce just oozing with spices is tossed with pappardelle pasta for the ultimate hearty and comforting dish.  [5] [6] [7]

Last but not least, and yes I did have room for it, dessert. The Apple Brown Betty was ordered all around. Nothing could be sweeter than this dish. Perfect for a November lunch, and the sweetest ending to this meal, the Apple Brown Betty was nothing short of an indulgent treat. Warm, spiced apple slices were tossed throughout a crunchy, crumbled topping. It may sound typical and ordinary to you, but the generous scoop of cinnamon ice cream on the side allows this dish to climb the charts. [8]

If you haven’t tried Cosimo’s yet, pop in and see them for either lunch or dinner. The atmosphere is quaint enough for a nice family dinner or lunch, bringing some friends out for a good time, or just hanging with others at their spacious bar for drinks and a few laughs. You’ll keep coming back again and again. Ciao!
