Harvest on Hudson: Hudson Valley Restaurant Week Fall 2012

by Simon Feldman It’s no surprise I’m a big fan of Harvest on Hudson restaurant. I live close by and it’s one of my neighborhood go-to places for Italian fine dining. It’s a versatile space. Depending on what you’re looking for its an ideal spot as a romantic sunset destination, for a large group celebration or just hanging out by the bar / lounge area and weather permitting in the garden by a fiery chiminea. My friend Elise joined me and as we shared our food through out the course of the meal, I listened to her reactions to the Harvest experience too, so I know that when I say “we had a wonderful time” its not just my own prejudice speaking. Upon arrival we were greeted with big smiles and asked if we would like to go to our table or have a drink at the bar. We opted to be seated, both of us being hungry. With menus in hand we looked over our choices. I love warm crusty bread with some virgin olive oil for dipping and that’s just how its served at the Harvest .
Brian, who was one of the managers that night, stopped by to welcome us, asked if we were happy with the table we had been seated at, and asked if we would like to start with a drink. Elise and I both enjoy full bodied red wines, but since she was driving, we decided to order by the glass. Brian recommended a Barbera d’asti and we both agreed it was a good choice.
For appetizers we shared the Butter Lettuce, Warm Almonds & Asiago with a Lemon olive oil dressing and the Smoked Trout with Artichoke. The lettuce was pillowy soft and the almonds were warm and toasty. The trout was perfectly filleted and lightly smoked. Our server checked in on us to see whether we needed anything else at the moment, “No we said, everything was fine”. A few moments later she re-appeared with two small portions of a Buckwheat Tagliatelle with a Garlic & Walnut sauce, compliments of the Chef Vincent Barcelona. I’ve dined many times at the Harvest, so I was pleasantly surprised to try something I had never had anywhere before. Elise and I both agreed it was as delicious as it was unusual.
For entrees we shared the Grilled Skirt Steak with caramelized sweet onion, potato gratin & chiani sauce and the Pork Scalloppini Marsala with wild mushrooms and buckwheat polenta.
Dessert was not one item but a trio of Hudson Valley Crown Maple Syrup & Sea Salt Panna Cotta, Flourless Chocolate Cake with Hudson Valley Whipped Cream and a warm Almond Cake with Mixed Berries. We both agreed that the dishes tasted excellant, the portions were ample, and we had a wonderfully satisfying dining experience.
