Moderne Barn was huge highlight in my ( Michele Curran) restaurant week experience. A few friends and I drove from Rockland to Westchester County to Armonk to check out this culinary delight. Moderne Barn is owned by the Livanos Family who operate and manage Oceana, Abboccato and Molyvos in New York City as well as the City Limits Diner Locations in White Plains NY and Stamford, CT and Burger Deluxe in Wayne, NJ. Executive Chef Ethan Kostbar uses a Mediterranean, New American approach to showcase ingredients with simplicity and seasonality. That combined with John Livanos’ 50 plus years of experience in the restaurant industry make for an exceptional evening out.
The restaurant itself has a barn-type feel but more contemporary. High ceilings, dark and light woods, wooden chandeliers; all account for the cozy atmosphere this place has to offer. A large wine cellar sits above the dining room and the extensive wine list has every selection you can think to choose.
Within my party, some of us chose to do the restaurant week menu and others not; also we had some overlap on selections. The top dish from the first course selections was Nonna’s Meatballs with tomato sauce, ricotta cheese and fresh basil. Coming from an Italian family, my grandmother made meatballs every sunday, these were outstanding. The Organic Garden Greens with cucumbers, red onions, radishes, shaved beets, and a champagne vinaigrette was an light and airy starter and The Lobster Bisque had a tomato soup feel to it, but overall good dishes.
Next up was out Entrees, we all either selected the Torchio Pasta with an oxtail ragu, foie gras butter and aged asiago cheese or the Roasted Pork Loin served with provolone polenta, haricot vert, roasted bell peppers, spanish onions, and a balsamic vinegar rosemary sauce. The pasta was excellent with just enough ragu and cheese to make for an excellent dish with just the right flavor. The pork loin had excellent flavoring and the combination of the polents and the onions with the sauce came together so sweetly. The pork was a bit over cooked but otherwise an tasty dish.
For our final course, the dessert selections were Homemade Ice Cream & Sorbet, Tahitian Vanilla Cheesecake, and a Chocolate Mousse Cake. I had the Chocolate Mousse Cake and it was divine, coupled with a nice cup of steaming hot coffee. My friends ordered off the main menu and all enjoyed their desserts immensely.
