Wasabi in Nyack: Hudson Valley Restaurant Week 2012

This month just seems to be flying by, I cannot believe that Thanksgiving is 1 week away. Sunday evening I (Michele Curran [1]) took my mother and my friend for dinner at Wasabi.


Wasabi is located in the heart of downtown Nyack, on Main Street. It is my favorite place to find sushi in Rockland County. From the simplest California Roll to the most complex, the freshness, flavors, and presentation are always to die for. Chef/Owner Doug Nguyen takes pride and precision in creating these masterpiece dishes.


The atmosphere at Wasabi is very chic, modern; a place you would find in NYC. We were greeted by a very nice hostess who took us to a table towards the back where I could see the sushi bar. Our waitress was a little slow coming to the table but they were very busy for a Sunday evening. After placing our drink orders, I had the delicious Mango Martini, we dove right into our menus.



We chose to do the restaurant week menu with a few additions.  For our first course, my mother had Sunomono which is tuna, crab, and tobiko wrapped in cucumber with rice vinegar; very light a delicious. My friend Kailan had the Rock Shrimp Tempura, small shrimp, battered and fried with a spicy yuzu aioli, crunchy and delicious. I had the spicy tuna roll, perfect amount of spicy sauce and fresh tuna made for a delectable first course.

The entree course was just a good as the first course. Kailan got the sushi platter, an assortment of rolls that included salmon and tuna. My mother had the Shrimp Teriyaki with mashed potatoes. She very much enjoyed this dish and I had the Vegetable Udon Noodles which were amazing. We also added the Strawberry Roll, spicy tuna and tobiko on the inside with strawberries wrapped around the rice. This roll is excellent, I highly recommend it.

I didn’t think we could eat anymore, but there was still dessert! We all ordered some green tea and each had one of the dessert options. There was a Green Tea Cheesecake, Tempura Ice Cream, and A Chocolate Ganache Cake.  All were light and delicious!

Wasabi is a great restaurant, the food is excellent and the atmosphere is hip and inviting. If I had to say there was anything “wrong” with this restaurant, it would be that the service is not always spectacular, but once you start eating, you tend to forget about it! I definitely recommend Wasabi!
