Sammy’s Downtown Bistro in Bronxville: Hudson Valley Restaurant Week Fall 2012

At night, the lights of Bronxville shine down from stately hillside homes and apartments. Most of the shops downtown are closed, but their lighted windows cast an orange glow on the sidewalks that line the  streets. It’s a small and charming world onto itself, and at its center is the warm and welcoming Sammy’s Downtown Bistro.

I am guest blogger Jessica Cohn [2]. I visited Sammy’s with my partner on Sunday evening . . . and am quite happy to report about it. Here, we weren’t being rushed. We weren’t being treated like numbers.

A pleasant greeter ushered us into this casual but elegant spot. At several tables, old friends shared news as they shared food. There was a well-balanced mix of families with older children, couples, and single diners. It was the kind of place where you immediately felt as though you were being given a passport to the neighborhood. That’s the magic of civility, really. You feel transported.

Sammy’s special menu was a crowd pleaser: HVRW diners could choose from salmon, chicken, short rib, veal, or shrimp and scallops. I have to say, I was pleased with my experience from start to finish. The bread had a sweet note, like challah, and the pomme salad was an autumn delight. The iceberg lettuce was drenched in honey and gorgonzola, and the apple slices were tucked inside, along with white raisins and pecans.

My partner tried the stuffed artichoke. Under its vegetable au jus were forkfuls of apple and cranberry, gorgonzola and walnuts. For his main course, he dug into the breaded veal enhanced with shallots, cheese, and tomatoes.

I was a happy camper with my Chicken Saltimboca. The chicken was layered with prosciutto and nestled next to au gratin potatoes. A thin layer of mozzarella covered it all, and underneath these layers of flavor, I found bursts of broccoli rabe and bits of pepper.

For the finish, we try the homemade chocolate mousse and the vanilla gelato. From start to end, the servers were gracious, and the water glasses were always full. What a pleasant way to transition from weekend to work week!
