Best Coffee Shops in Westchester and Rockland: What’s Brewing for 2013?

A great cup of coffee can be destination-worthy. This week, with many people home from work, is an optimal opportunity to try out a new cuppa Joe at a brand new coffee spot. We have a few great recommendations for the best coffee shops in Westchester and Rockland from local residents.

Butler’s pick: A transplanted Atlanta, author Butler has made his home in Mahopac since 1973. He’s a fan of quick and easy, frequenting lots of local delis for coffee-to-go, but he likes to linger at Dish Cafe, an adorable sit-down restaurant that serves lunch and dinner — and fabulous coffee. “It’s also a bistro and wine bar.” Details: Open noon-3 p.m. for lunch, Tuesday-Saturday; dinner 5-9 p.m Monday-Thursday,5-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday. 947 S. Calce, the executive director of the Westchester Italian Cultural Center in Tuckahoe has a lot of options near her downtown village office.
Calce’s picks: “72 Main Street recently opened up and it’s a wonderful coffee place. They also have wraps, soup and self-serve yogurt.” Details: Open 6 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday-Friday; 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday; 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday. 72 Main St., 914-268-0272, Tuckahoe. “And then there’s a great Italian coffee place, Pane & Gelato nearby in Eastchester; they have Italian ice cream, gelato and delicious espresso.” Details: 8 a.m.-11:30 p.m. daily, 290 White Plains Road, Eastchester, 914-337-1800.
Derry, a longtime New Hempstead resident, is a well-known vocal coach who has worked with Marc Anthony and Katy Perry. His coffee stops are pretty basic.
Derry’s picks: “We like Bagel Boys Cafe in Suffern.” Along with traditional coffee, they also serve Snickerdoodle Coffee, bagels, of course, along with sandwches and wraps. Details: Open 5 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday; 5 a.m.-3 p.m Sunday. 9 N. Airmont Road, Airmont, 845-368-3456.
DeCicco’s family is the founder of DeCicco’s Marketplace and the coffee there, of course, is tops. But this stand-up comedian has been known to get her caffeine fix elsewhere:
DeCicco’s picks: “Dolce serves coffee, capuccino and chocolate!” Details: Open 10:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday; 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. 218 S. Monaco lives in Upper Grandview and works in downtown Nyack as the CEO of Group M, a boutique public relations firm. She likes to spread the love around and shop local whenever and wherever she can and that includes her coffee.
Monaco’s picks: “There are so many wonderful shops in Nyack and Piermont that I frequent. I feel a little disloyal by mentioning just a few, but I absolutely must mention my favorite den of decadent eating — Didier Dumas Bakery. Heavenly.” Along with coffee, capuccino and espresso, there are pastries, crepes, and cakes, and tarts. A few tables are available for diners. Jopling was born in London, and at the age of 14 made her concerto debut playing violin at the Royal Albert Hall. The classical rock violinist now makes her home in Peekskill, where she has lots of dining options.
Jopling’s picks: “The Peekskill Coffee House. I tend to come here a lot; I love the coffee, and the live music here.” There are special blends, beans from South America, Indonesia and Africa, along with organic blends, pastries, muffins and scones, along with ample seating. Polpettina Coffee Bar: This cute coffee bar and market adjacent to Polpettina Homestyle Pizza Kitchen serves Blue Bottle organic coffee and continental breakfast options from Balthazar Bakery in Manhattan. Details: Open daily, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. 102 Fisher Avenue, Eastchester, 914-961-0061.
Art Cafe: The artful foam swirls on the capuccino is enough justification to make the trip to this cozy and colorful cafe. But there are also macchiato, mochaccino and Turkish coffee drinks, too, along with lots of seating and a menu of breakfast and lunch items, including salads and toastinis. Black Cow Coffee Company: This popular Pleasantville and Croton beanery has lots of tables if you want to sit and savor a variety of beans from Brazil, Africa Colombia, Costa Rica and beyond. Special coffee drinks, scones, croissants.
