Would you believe that I was also going to write about my new juicer this week? And that I apparently just got the same juicer as my Small Bites colleague Maria Reina? Well, I was, and I did. But it’s all good, because while I was at Whole Foods in White Plains this week picking up more fruits and veggies for my juicer, I saw that they are now serving Beyond Meat!
What is Beyond Meat, you might ask?
Months ago, I started reading about the next great meat substitute- and more and more people seemed to think that it tastes and feels just like chicken in your mouth. I was a little nervous about trying it, as I thought that I might be a little turned off by the texture. After all, it is supposed to mimic meat quite well.
Personally, I wasn’t really looking for a new meat substitute- I’m very happy with tofu, tempeh, seitan and beans. That said, I do enjoy the convenience of some of the meat substitutes out there, and sometimes you really do just want something that tastes like things you remember, or to be like everyone else. And if this stuff is good enough to start getting on restaurant menus and such, I think that would be pretty great for all of us- omnis and vegans alike!
Of course, you’ll have to judge for yourself what you think of it, but I can at least show you what it looks like.
All vegan, gluten free, relatively low calorie and high protein. Not bad!
Am I mistaken, or does that really look like chicken?
Having not tasted chicken in the last 9 years, I can’t absolutely vouch for the texture and taste comparison to chicken. I do think that had I not known it was Beyond Meat, I would have been going back to double check that it was absolutely meat-free. I would be very curious to hear from anyone that does eat meat who tries this, to see what they think. Is this really the next frontier in meat substitutes?
The taste was good! I only got a very small portion because I was a little nervous about the texture, but I was wishing that I had gotten more. I will definitely try it again if I see it, and I hope that Whole Foods will try it in some other dishes!
I shop at the Whole Foods in White Plains, but according to the Beyond Meat website, it is also available at the Whole Foods in Yonkers. It’s not available to buy to use in your own dishes at this time to the best of my knowledge, and is only available in the prepared foods section. Hopefully that will change in the future!
