Plates in Larchmont is a homey neighborhood restaurant that has been delighting patrons for years. Recently, Bill Cary ventured out into a snowy weeknight seeking some comfort from the kitchen of Plates owner and chef Matt Karp.
Karp, the executive chef and co-owner (with Arthur Jacobson, the proprietor of the Larchmont Tavern), has an impressive resume, with experience at Bouley, Restaurant Daniel, Park Avenue Cafe and Nick and Eddie Restaurant, all in Manhattan. At Plates, he makes his own pastas, sourdough breads, confits, infused oils and vinegars, and smoked and barbecued meats. All of the desserts are made in house.
Karp says he’s gotten more casual over the years, now offering tacos, wings and pizzas, along with striped bass, chicken roulade and Berkshire pork chops. “Times have changed — I’ve changed.”
