If you’ve ever strolled the cafe-lined streets of Paris or Greenwich Village, you probably have an affection for the laissez-faire style dining that caters to long meals and good company. UNoodles Snack Bar in Haverstraw, from the team behind Union Restaurant and Bar Latino, captures the sentiment.
UNoodles is the more casual of the two restaurants from owners Paulo Feteira and chef David Martinez. The restaurant features an oval-shaped bar and an adjacent long communal table, adding to the casual feel. “We wanted to create a community kind of place. Eat by yourself, go with friends, meet new people. There are no specifications for how you should go out,” says Feteira. When the weather finally warms up, the front opens up for open air dining.
Martinez, who was mentored by Peter X. Kelly, is originally from El Salvador so naturally there is a Latino influence. His partner is quick to point out that his flavor combinations and skills run deep, though. Fateira says, “he gets a lot of influences from all over. Latino is there; you can feel it and taste it, but main focus is on flavors and textures.”
There is a nice wine selection and also plenty of cocktails, including the popular Union Sangria. When you go, expect a variety of noodles, from Asian to Italian, but also small plates and snacks, like meatball slides and chicken wings. Also, the BLT hot dog sounds like a must try: Colombian sausage topped with BLT salad served on a roll.
