Where did summer go? The WBC will let everyone ponder that question while reading our roundup of August breakfasts. During the last full month of the season, we breakfasted at the Executive Diner in Hawthorne, Porter House in White Plains, and The Peekskill Coffee House in…well, where do you think?

Aug. 10: The Executive Diner, located along route 9A in Hawthorne, is one of the county’s tried and true diners. It’s a great place to grab a late-night snack after a movie at the nearby theater…or to grab a simple breakfast. On the WBC’s August visit, we found that Executive stands out because of its willingness to accommodate—and even suggest—special breakfast requests. Sylvia was delighted when the server offered her grilled tomatoes to accompany her healthy omelette, and Reid’s request for a bacon omelette was fulfilled with great success. Good job, Executive Diner. We’ll be back.
Aug. 18: Slowly but surely the WBC has been brunch crawling through the pubs along Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains. We’ve already paid visits to Rob Black’s and Brazen Fox. Now it was Porter House’s turn. We found that Porter House is better suited to serve up late-night ale than Sunday morning coffee. Coffee service was very, very slow, making those in need of caffeine quite cranky. The food was hit or miss. Sylvia was quite pleased with her egg white omelette and melon-free fruit salad. Shelley, however, was disappointed with her Porter House breakfast (scrambled eggs, potatoes, toast, and sausage); between the puddle of grease left by the potatoes, the barely toasted toast, and the hard sausages, it wasn’t a great meal to start the day with. (Shelley does, however, love Porter House’s happy hour chicken nachos; too bad they’re not on the brunch menu!)
The Peekskill Coffee House
Aug. 25: We conclude the month with a trip up-county to The Peekskill Coffee House. The Coffee House is a charming little café, perfect for meeting up with friends to enjoy a warm cup of something along with a small snack. And, with the recent expansion into the adjoining space, it now offers up heartier fare, including crepes and waffles. Perfect for breakfast! Our breakfast meals were well-cooked and tasty, making the Peekskill Coffee House a great destination for a relaxed, simple breakfast.
