Before filling ourselves with Thanksgiving fare, we enjoyed a few breakfasts in November: a simple breakfast at Westchester Bagel Café in Scarsdale and a very, very leisurely meal at Sofrito in White Plains.

Westchester Bagel Cafe
Nov. 2: Tucked between the stores across from the Vernon Hills Shopping Center in Eastchester is the Westchester Bagel Café. It’s great for a quick, cheap, but hearty meal. Be warned, though: on a weekend this little place fills up quickly, and if you arrive after 10, it’s likely you may have to wait for a table. The menu has an assortment of breakfast items and sandwiches. Shelley enjoyed the lox bagel special for $8, while Sylvia got a reasonably priced yet deliciously jumbo egg sandwich. This is a great spot for some bagels on the run or for a quick sit-down meal.
Nov. 17 : Sofrito provides a brunch that offers a successful integration of Spanish flavors into brunch items. A highlight was the guava bbq sauce served with the empanadas. It provided a unique sweet-spicy flavor blend that complemented the empanadas well. Sylvia loved the frittata, which blended eggs, shrimp, chorizo, sweet plantains, queso blanco, onions, and sweet peppers. It sounds like a lot of ingredients mixed together, but it worked. When we went for brunch on a rainy Sunday, we were only a handful of patrons in the restaurant. Despite this, our meal was very leisurely. We mean very. The meal took three hours, and none of us could really figure out why. Fortunately we didn’t have any place to be. We’re not sure if this is the norm for brunch at Sofrito; the food is worth it, but keep this in mind in case you want a more prompt brunch experience.
