When you picture the VIP Super Bowl Tailgate— a massive pregame party with celebrities, team owners and sponsors— you might not think blueberry pie. But that’s just what the host committee for this year’s game asked for.

Mini blueberry pies, 1,500 of them, will be served by Vivian McKenzie of Kathleen’s Tea Room in Peekskill.super bowl vip party catered by kathleen's tea room peekskill

McKenzie was surprised to win the contract to cater the tailgate for 11,000 people, but the committee felt her sweet pies would be a nice nod to the stadium’s home state of New Jersey, where the state fruit is the blueberry.

Baking 1,500 pies for one party is beyond the usual quantities for the cozy tea shop, but McKenzie isn’t worried.

“I’ve been planning for it, the product in and ready to go,” says McKenzie. “I can do all the prep work now but all the pies will be baked and packed fresh on Friday.”

There’s good news for those of us left off the VIP Super Bowl party guest list: Kathleen’s Tea Room will be selling the 3-inch blueberry pies through the month of February. The pies will be served on a plate with fresh fruit and whipped cream for $5.25 each.

The shop also carries 52 loose teas, and the menu includes soups, sandiwches, quiche and other fresh baked goods. Kathleen’s Tea Shop is also available for catering private parties, VIP or not.
