*Hot dogs are sort of the last vestige of cheap, gooood eats. From BBQs to beachside to ball games, they’re arguably the quintessential summer food and our region has no shortage of iconic places to find ‘em. With a toddler in tow, I’m on a kid-friendly quest to taste the best of the best.
I have been known to road trip just for the sake of good eats. Notoriously drove two additional hours during an already double-digit hours long road trip just to play a little game of Diners, Drive-ins & Dives. So when my best bro moved to Rockland, I softened the blow of a friendship divided by bridge by exploring her new neighborhood’s yummy offerings.
The bountiful menu at Nanuet’s Dog House proved to make the trip worth it immediately. Dishing out more than just hot dogs, options such as fried seafood, ribs, even whole roasted chicken grace the menu. There’s dessert galore, any beverage you can imagine to imbibe AND – beer and wine for the grown-us. As is the general standard with most places outside of the Greater New York City area, space is a non-issue so booths & tables are abundant. (Gotta love that – when you tuck in to a booth with a toddler you never know what kind of long battle you may be about to embark on. It helps to not feel like you’re holding up the line!)
We were there for the dogs, but the choices didn’t stop there. For starters, you can get yours split and griddled or deep fried (not breaded, just plopped in a fryer.) I tried both for posterity’s sake and though the fried one was a whole new world of dogs, my heart belongs to the split & griddled. Driving home my love for this spot was the abbondanza of toppings available for either style dog, including my all time favorite – grilled peppers & onions. Molta bene!
