*Hot dogs are sort of the last vestige of cheap, gooood eats. From BBQs to beachside to ball games, they’re arguably the quintessential summer food and our region has no shortage of iconic places to find ‘em. With a toddler in tow, I’m on a kid-friendly quest to taste the best of the best.
I started off my visit by making a rookie mistake – I ordered onions & sauerkraut. Technically, I blame my husband (since he was the one who wanted the aforementioned toppings,) but my window request prompted the friendly attendant to ask “this your first time?” And no sir, this was not my first rodeo, no. Walter’s was a mandatory pilgrimage for anyone who went to high school in Westchester so of course I made mine. And my trip this summer Sunday did not yield results any different from the ones I remember from way back (ok not TOO “way” back) when.
I’m sure you’ve heard by now that Walter’s recently underwent a brief renovation period. While the kitchen itself seems to have had a bit of a sprucing up, the iconic stand & iconic dogs still stayed firmly in tact. Your option for dog toppings still remain the same – ketchup, mustard or Walter’s own relish speckled mustard, with a bounty of fry options on the side. We opted for Walter’s mustard slathered dogs & their delightfully spicy fries.
Tasted just like high school – a combo of nostalgia, youth & perhaps a sprinkle of bad decisions.
Only thing that was different was just how much I appreciated their abundant “backyard” of picnic tables. My love for the availability of those was second only to how much I loved that they served a kid-sized “puppy dog”, mine went to town on hers.
Even bigger news for the hometown hero – they’re partnering up with Gun Hill Brewery! Check ‘em out during the Bronx brewery’s tasting hours this Saturday (follow along on their Facebook for details) as they debut as the sudsy spot’s new food vendor.
And a classic just keeps getting better & better.
