Sometimes, small family restaurants just can’t stay small.
Antonino “Anthony” Spadaro added a second Spadaro Ristorante location in Port Chester in May with more than 200 seats. A third Spadaro is expected to open in September, at 753 Central Park Ave., Scarsdale.
Spadaro’s parents, Antonio and Rina Spadaro, opened the first U.S. location in New Rochelle in 2008, later expanding their capacity from 36 to 80 seats. The family founded the first namesake restaurant in Rome in 1959.
Spadaro chose the Port Chester area for the second location because people told him they loved the place, but didn’t want to make the drive to New Rochelle. Plus, it’s a hot spot for dining and young people.
Besides the size, the biggest difference is the glittering gold-tiled, brick pizza oven imported from Naples, Italy. Firing up to 900 degrees and visible to diners in the open pizza kitchen, the curvaceous mosaic oven beckons you to gaze into the oven’s flame-filled mouth, where Naples-born chef Ciro Iovine feeds his pizzas, cooking the pies in 90 seconds.
Try the Carrettiera pizza made with spicy-sweet pork sausage, mild Fior di’latte mozzarella and bitter broccoli rabe sautéed in olive oil, garlic and red pepper.
“I started making pizza when I was 14, and now I’m 33, and every day is like my first day working. It makes me that happy,” Iovine said as he kneaded a round of dough on the counter. That dough is imported from Italy and takes seven days to rise.
Spadaro in Port Chester still has the pastas that made the New Rochelle place a favorite, including the Fettuccine Spadaro with egg, prosciutto, mushrooms and black pepper and the Bucatini Amatriciana, a hollow spaghetti with guanciale ham in a spicy red sauce.
This new location has a private party room, outdoor dining and happy hour from 4-7 p.m. Monday to Friday with $4 drink specials. There’s a $26.50 prix fixe menu on Mondays; karaoke on Tuesdays, Ladies Night on Thursdays and a live DJ at 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
